Hey all I have a railing job I'm working on and I need to replicate an older style rail that is already existing and I'm having a hard time finding what I need. On the top posts of the older rails are 1 1/2" diameter steel spheres that sit inside a hollow half round. King Metals doesn't have a half round big enough to fit this size, nor a sphere big enough to fit exact in their 1 1/2" hollow hemisphere. Any one else know where I can get some?

a picture would be helpful you could take the 1/2 round that close heat it up and stretch or shrink around the size you need to go with the inner one you need if I am understanding you. Are you sure it is forged and not cast.

Chris,

McMaster-Carr and MSC Industrial Supply both carry steel balls in a fairly wide range of sizes. They both have online catalogs.

You might also look at the Wagner Companies and Lawler Foundry for hemispheres and balls.

In addition to the suggested supplier that Rich mentioned, I would call King as well. It can be difficult to find exactly what you need from their print and online catalogs. Sometimes a call will produce better results. They seem to be pretty dedicated to helping the customer, even with custom items.

hooverprecision.com sells balls in many materials and sizes and the prices are a fraction of King Supply.

How many do you need? Objects this size and shape are a trivial lathe job for any reasonably equipped machinist or machine shop. Get them turned to precise dimensions or get them roughed out and finish them yourself to your own requirements.
