This demo was submitted to me by Grizz a few months ago. It was originally intended to be for the chat room demo's, but in the interest of time, I decided to post it here.

Sorry it took so long Grizz. It's an excellent demo. PunkWorthy

Scroll forming demonstration

This demo will show the basics of scroll fabrication and forming.

We’ll forge a couple different end styles: Bolt end, fishtail and penny.

Then we’ll show how to complete the forming of a scroll.

We will also show a few tools used in the process of forging scrolls.

1) Cross peen hammer

2) Scroll starter

3) Small scroll jig

4) Medium scroll jig

5) Large scroll jig

6) Various scrolling pliers

We are using ½” sq bar, but flats, rounds, channels, and even tubing can be used.

Now let’s fire the forge and start with a fishtail end.

Fishtail Scroll

Heat about 2 12” of the end of the bar to red hot

Place on the far side of the anvil and strike with your hammer on an angle to taper end of bar.

Heat again then using a cross peen hammer widen the end of the scroll. Leave grooves to simulate the look of a “fish” tail.
[attachment=3073][attachment=3074][attachment=3075]

Take another heat and go to the scroll starter and bend the 1st 180 degrees over it.
[attachment=3076][attachment=3077][attachment=3078]

Then go to the small scroll jig and continue bending to desired size.

End of fishtail scroll.

Bolt End Scroll

Now we’ll forge a bolt end Scroll.

First again heat about 2 – 2 ½” of end of bar.

Put a notch about ¾” back from the end of the bar. Notch should be about 34 of the way through the bar.
[attachment=3083][attachment=3084]

Heat just the end of the bar and hang over the anvil and stat by working the corners to round them off. Mostly work the end of the bar the other corner will work itself on the anvil.
[attachment=3085][attachment=3086][attachment=3087][attachment=3088][attachment=3089]

Fold the bolt end over onto itself. Try to keep it as tight as possible.
[attachment=3090]

Once you have the end to look like a bolt, then we can begin forming the scroll on the scroll starter again.
[attachment=3091][attachment=3092]

After getting the first bend made reheat then go to the small scroll jig, bend as desired.
[attachment=3093][attachment=3094]

To make a larger scroll continue to heat and go to the medium scroll jig and keep on forming.

End of Bolt end Scroll

Very nice demo Grizz. Sure makes me wish I could have been the the Mash. You might have been missing a scroll pattern or 2 though. Har Har

Just kidding, I would like some some patterns like those. Very Nice.

Spider I actually have more that I may add later, Thanks for the input. Also we did a bear head demo at MM '07 and we'll get that demo posted probably in June once Matt has enough info ( pictures and a write up) and more time. ha ha
I got in trouble yesterday with Susan, she caught me at the anvil testing a necking tool I had just made. I have a 10 pound lifting restriction and the tool is prob more than that. She almost took the hammer to me.

What did you made the scroll starter out of?
very nice and informative demo BeerBeerBeerPunk
Peace!
[Beer]Great job Grizz…looking forward to the bear head demo too!Beer

Thanks, GrizzBeerBeer

It would be great if you added to it, perhaps showing how to make some of the other scroll ends. Looking forward to the bear heads also. If you want to do the next demo in the chat room, that can be arrangedPunk

I have one question: one of the jigs that you show in the "scroll tools" pictures has a different profile from the others (2nd photo from left). Rather than being a complete scroll outline, it has a small incomplete circle, then the scroll starts farther out. Does it have a special purpose?
Happy Bravo! Thanks for sharing Grizz, you're work is very beautiful Worthy

I can help if you have more photos...probably we may add them in a flash gallery...let me know it.
