Anyone ever tried to seal a piece, after it has naturaly rusted?
I make rusted sculptures, I just love the deep and lively colours of the rust.
Most pieces have thick steel, which will last for years and years. But some pieces also have thin materials like sheetmetal. It would be good to protect them.
But I dont want to lose the natural look of rust.
Another reason is that the rusted water (rain) coming from the pieces, stains the stones of the garden. Not all customers will appreciate it.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried a clear matte finish sealer, you can use a paste auto wax When you try it on a small scrap section make sure it doesn't remove or change the patina to much. They have liquid auto waxes/polishes that you pump spray out of a bottle. Again main thing is to make sure it doesn't remove or change the patina. You can also try a high solids flat or matte acrylic floor finish and lay a couple of coats on it as each one drys. they go on milky white but dry clear. When you use the clear spray in a spray can or spray gun make sure the humdity is not high or above what the list on the can. Also make sure there is no borax of flux left on the welds as that reacts with the clear and make clumps of white to grey stuff.
beeen there done that!

Josh, search this site for "permalac" Its designed for this.
Josh two great products are Permalaq (which has UV inhibitors in it to keep it from turning yellow in the sun) or we used to use, with great results) Penetrol.
Hey guys,
Thanks for the info. I checked out the products. They indeed seem to fill my needs.
I am looking to purchase it here in the Netherlands. No luck yet.
I dont even know if its on the market here. Maybe another Brandname.
I'll keep looking.

OK so I have a couple rust related questions too...
So by letting the steel rust, either naturally or with one of the recipies I've seen on this site, then applying Permalaq directly over the rust, it will seal it?
I know most products say to remove any loose rust but you don't do this with Permalaq? You just apply directly over the rust...?
Does the rust keep...rusting... under the permalaq or does the rust process stop because the air is not getting to it?
Then what is the wax for? Just to make it glossy or does it perform some other function.
And did I read somewhere that you could just wax directly over the rust to seal it too?
Permalac is great stuff. They now have it in three kinds....gloss, satin, and flattened. Fast tip that I learned at a Ron Young Demo. Before you seal/ spray your finish you can wipe the work down with acetone. This removes the moisture from the surface. You could do this before you use wax sealer as well.
Couple of other tips I learned from Ron Young...
#1...Tortoise Shell finish with cold patina....yes it's possible
This proccess is usually done with hot patina.
To do this use bubble wrap popped. Try out different sizes of bubble wrap for different effects.
#2... Fuming technique
Since cold patinas get deeper/richer with the length of time of application. try applying the patina then cover it with plastic wrap/ wrinkle up the wrap to create little air pockets and viening. this will start to fume the wrinkles/air gaps in the platic wrap.
Good luck..... let me know how it works for you....Louie
